Join Blake Dinius, Plymouth County Entomologist, on a journey into the fascinating world of insects. Together, we’ll explore the diverse species that may be found right in your backyard—the "good, the bad, and the ugly."
Insects are often referred to as "the little ones who run our world," a phrase famously attributed to entomologist E. O. Wilson. These fascinating creatures, along with spiders, make up 85% of all animal species on Earth. To put that into perspective, there are 300-400 species of silverfish but only 15 species of goldfish. There are more species of bees than there are birds, and the number of moth species is more than double that of all vertebrates combined.
Insects are vital components of Mother Nature’s intricate food webs. Nearly 78% of flowering plants rely on insects for reproduction, and over 60% of bird species depend on them for food. Additionally, insects play crucial roles in pest control and waste decomposition. Knowing your insect neighbors can help you become a better gardener and steward of the earth.
